The interrelationship between pulpal and periodontal diseases has been the subject of speculation, confusion and controversy for many years. These lesions often present challenges to the clinician with regard to correct diagnosis and subsequent management of the involved teeth. To arrive at a correct diagnosis, the clinician should have a thorough understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of both pulpal and periodontal disease. Proper management may include endodontic or periodontal therapy, either individually or in combination. to achieve healing and long-term tooth survival. This presentation will review the disease process, the necessary diagnostic methods to differentiate these lesions, and decision-making in their treatment.
At the conclusion of this lecture, the participants should be able to:
- Better understand the pathogenesis of pulpal and periodontal disease.
- Better understand the healing potential of teeth with furcation radiolucent lesions.
- Better understand the healing potential of teeth with J-shaped radiolucent lesions.
- Formulate an appropriate treatment plan for these case types.
