Combined Nonsurgical/Surgical Retreatment

Terry Pannkuk, DDS, MScD Complications: Advanced Management, Surgical Retreatment

Should surgical endodontic retreatment be performed immediately after nonsurgical endodontic retreatment?

Case: Patient presented with previous endodontic treatment and recurrent pathosis requiring a combination nonsurgical/surgical approach

Patient: 36-year-old male in excellent health

Chief Complaint: Asymptomatic

Dental History: The patient reported that the root canal treatment had been performed in Brazil many years earlier (mandibular left first molar, #19). The crown had been placed 5-10 years earlier. No recent dentistry had been performed. The patient had become aware of the tooth within the previous 2 weeks noticing some slight pain. His dentist took a radiograph, noted a periapical radiolucency and referred him for specialty examination and care
