Previously Untreated Apical Root Anatomy

Terry Pannkuk, DDS, MScD Instructional, Cleaning and Shaping

Apical branches and accessory canals are commonly seen at root termini and should be routinely demonstrated by most root canal fillings

Patient: 22-year-old female in excellent health

Chief Complaint: asymptomatic

Dental History: The patient’s previous dentist had performed root canal treatment on tooth #14 in 2006. Her new dentist noted a periapical radiolucency associated with the mesiobuccal root of tooth #14 and the tooth required a full-coverage restoration. The patient was referred for endodontic retreatment in 2012.
