Can and should deep Zirconium posts be removed for nonsurgical retreatment?

Case: Patient presented with an abscess maxillary anterior tooth having had a deep Zirconium post placed

Patient: 44 year-old woman in excellent health (2003)

Chief Complaint: Asymptomatic

Dental History: Root canal treatment had been previously performed on the maxillary left central incisor (#9) 1974 in Peru. A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown had been placed on the tooth 2001 in Peru. Her local dentist noted a periapical radiolucency on the tooth during a routine dental exam with full mouth radiographs and referred her to the author’s practice for evaluation in 2003.
