Multiple Long Term Endodontic Recall Exams: Cracked Teeth

Terry Pannkuk, DDS, MScD Instructional, Complications: Advanced Management, Fractured Roots, Recall Observations

Do endodontically treated cracked teeth last?

Patient: 83 year-old male with hypothyroidism, Type 2 diabetes, and controlled hypertension (2015) , was age 57 in a noncontributory medical history when first treated in 1988.

Chief Complaint: Biting sensitivity (1988)

Dental History: When the patient first presented to the author in 1988 his dentist had prepared the maxillary left first molar for a crown, noted a crown fracture, and a near exposure of the mesiobuccal pulp horn. The patient had been reporting biting sensitivity for the previous 6 months in the maxillary left posterior area. The patient was referred for an endodontic consultation before finishing the restorative work in the sextant.

The patient returned 5 years later (1993) for examination of the maxillary right first molar reporting hot and cold sensitivity before and after crown preparation by his dentist. A dentinal crack was noted during preparation and the patient was referred to the author when symptoms did not resolve.
